WHAT IS AN EDUCATIONAL THERAPIST?
An educational therapist is certified teacher who is specifically trained to work in a one-to-one setting with individuals who are struggling in the area of academics . The educational therapist diagnoses and provides individualized educational interventions for the individual with learning disabilities, learning differences , as well as addressing the social/emotional aspect of those learning problems. The educational therapist serves a wide variety of students, both children and adults.
Credentials: An educational therapist is certified by the National Association of Educational Therapist, or from a four year university offering a certificate partnering with the National Association. In addition. most educational therapists have a teaching credential, (often in the area of learning handicaps) in addition to the certification from the Association.
WHAT DOES AN EDUCATIONAL THERAPIST DO?
Educational therapists provide intensive, individualized educational interventions for children and adults with learning disabilities and other learning challenges such as dyslexia; ADD; language processing problems; poor motivation; low academic self-esteem; poor social, organizational, and study skills; and/or performance anxiety. Clients may include students needing appropriate school placement or adults needing workplace support. **
AN EDUCATIONAL THERAPIST:
Does formal and informal educational assessment
Synthesizes information from other specialists and parents
Develops and implements remedial programs for learning and behavior
Forms supportive relationships with the client and those involved in the client’s educational development
Facilitateses communication between the client, the family, the school and involved professionals
